Fairer Weather
Fairer Weather

These wilting words upon my lips comprise a psalm
I dared to write in my own name,
But in the same breath I curse the very ground on which I walk
Each footstep dripping with shame.

These disparate parts & contradicting hearts,
Eternal tug of war, I ache for that which I deplore.
Someday they might align and come together.

Audacity like ashes fills my ears, ignores advice from those that I hold dear,
But Mr. Wood tells me what is good,
Tells me what I think’s not what I am
And that’s the thought I’m clinging to.

These desperate winds & corresponding whims,
They blow me to & fro, I’ve locked the door, I’d like to go.
You get what you expect.
It hasn’t happened yet,
But it might come together.

(stitch & mend, and twist & rend, fix & bend, pull yourself together)

On sparrow’s wings I sing a melody despondent as can be.
It splits the air, but no one cares!
Oh my, I’m tired of listening to me.

~ hum ~

A fearsome storm has torn my soul asunder.
It falls more apart with every stroke of thunder.
But I can’t wait for “might”s and fairer weather—
Gotta find a way that I can come together.

I Don't Mind
I Don't Mind

I woke up today and the least I could say
Is “Where would I be without this brand new day?”
And while I’m stuck in this rut
I know there’s nowhere but up
I can’t raise my head but
I can raise my glass and say
I was just thinking

Well I don’t mind hanging around this mean old town
But you don’t want me to stay
And I don’t mind playing the clown
With this hang dog frown and the nerve to say
Don’t tell me that it’s part of the game
I couldn’t take the guilt or the shame
And I don’t mind if you don’t mind more of the same

As I walk down the street ignoring people I meet
I just waste my time and make up a rhyme
And wonder when the time comes
If I’ll just pick up and run or will I stand my ground
With my feet of clay and say, “I was just thinking”

Well I don’t mind hanging around this mean old town
But you don’t want me to stay
And I don’t mind playing the clown
With that hang dog frown and the nerve to say
Don’t tell me that it’s part of the game
I couldn’t take the guilt or the shame
And I don’t mind if you don’t mind more of the same

Remember that time, that wonderful time
I must be dreaming
I wanna go back and see if I can
Make a change in the last two things that I said to you
Enough to make a difference in a room with a view
But I already know the way it would be without you

At the end of the day, in my own special way
When I’ve lost control and nothing is going my way
I’ll just pray to the man in the moon
That you’ll come back soon and I won’t have to say
I was just thinking out loud
With my head floating up the the clouds
Instead of just drinking I should be thinking

Well I don’t mind hanging around this mean old town
But you don’t want me to stay
And I don’t mind playing the clown
With that hang dog frown and the nerve to say

Well I don’t mind hanging around this mean old town
But you don’t want me to stay

And I don’t mind playing the clown
With that hang dog frown and the nerve to say
Don’t tell me that it’s part of the game
I couldn’t take the guilt or the shame
And I don’t mind if you don’t mind more of the same

Peggy Sue
Peggy Sue Stole the Mail Truck Again

Peggy Sue stole the mail truck again.

She called it direct action, and then

She lost my grandpa’s medicine,

My water bill was late,

She shredded wedding invitations

And she did not hesitate.

Peggy Sue stole the mail truck again.

We didn’t know if it was crickets or tinnitus that kept her up at night.

But don’t we all know that feeling in those lonely hours when something isn’t right?

Call it fate, call it karma, call it anything but boredom.

I mean that’s what it is, but no need to put too fine a point on it.

Peggy Sue stole the mail truck again.

She called it a Saturday well spent.

She threw out my aunt’s thank you notes

And spat upon the census,

She delivered all our love letters

But to the wrong addresses.

Peggy Sue stole the mail truck again.

She tampers with forever stamps,

Covered envelopes with gum,

Rubs together eager hands,

She’s only just begun!

And just about three days ago

Our Peggy lost her job.

Better pay for overnight

For it won’t be long…

But who could ever tell what might set her off?

It changes every time.

The one thing that we can tell you all for sure is that you’ll be fine,

But for those of us stuck here it’s just a simple fact of life.

It’s just another day with our local postal parasite.

So we sigh!

Peggy Sue stole the mail truck again.

She thinks the task is just her bent.

She ignores the fragile stickers

And throws packages about,

She signs her name on each petition so that there can be no doubt:

Peggy Sue stole the mail truck again.

Peggy Sue stole the mail truck again.

Peggy Sue stole the mail truck again.

Peggy Sue stole the mail truck again.
